FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ORGANIZING YOUR STORAGE UNIT

  • Keep all your items you're not going to need in the back of the storage and things you'll need to access to regularly in the front of the unit.
  • Put something between the floor and the items like furniture and boxes to reduce condensation. Using wood pallets or word boards underneath your furniture and boxes prevents condensation damage.
  • Store the heavy items toward the bottom and the lighter items toward the top.
  • Because you never know when something might damage your storage unit it is wise to store smaller, more valuable items toward the rear of the storage unit and large items toward the front.
  • Protecting your items while they are in storage is important so cover everything with plastic sheets or visqueen to protect your items from dust and water damage.

PACKING TIP AND TECHNIQUES

  • Try and concentrate on one room at a time.
  • Label each packed box with a brief description of the stuff inside and where it will be unpacked at.
  • Keep the weight per packed box reasonable by putting heavy items in smaller boxes by themselves.
  • Don't put tape on polished or painted wood finishes.
  • Fragile items need plenty of cushioning and should be double boxed.
  • Be smart when loading up the boxes, don't place your china plates under your box of heavy books.

STORING PHOTOGRAPHS

  • Photographs tend to curl and you need to place them flat, best between a couple of pieces of cardboard and then tape the cardboard pieces together.
  • Go to a photo shop and get the images scanned and put onto a disc before you put the photographs into a storage unit.
  • For even better protection on top of the disc, store a copy of the images on to a hard drive.
  • For the triple whammy protection have the images stored offsite with an internet backup service or even better... upload the scanned images to Google Picasa for free!
  • Don't store irreplaceable photos.
  • Negatives and photographs take up very little storage space.

STORING ITEMS WITH SMALL ENIGINES

  • Drain gasoline and oil from all small engines (leaf blowers, go carts, generators, etc).

TIPS ON STORING YOUR RV

  • Always remove any and all perishable food from the RV.
  • Make sure the refrigerator and all power sources are turned off.
  • Make sure all energy sources are turned off (gas, electric, solar).
  • Clean out the refrigerator of all food and drink.
  • Clean interior and pull down shades or close the blinds.
  • Clean exterior and cover the RV or at least the outdoor vents and filters.
  • Turn off all the propane cylinders and cover the regulator back up.
  • Walk around the RV and look for signs of wear and tear.
  • Check the tire pressure and cover the tires.
  • Empty and thoroughly rinse all holding tanks.

LONG TERM RV STORAGE TIPS...

  • Cover or tape vents to the furnace and range hood.
  • To prevent condensation you'll need to make sure all roof vents and windows are closed.
  • Another way to prevent condensation is to use a chemical type dehumidifier.
  • Spray lubricant in locks and hinges.
  • All water tanks, lines and pumps should be drained.

STORING BOOKS

  • When it comes to packing books you need to pack books flat, not standing on their ends. When a book is upright the spines are not protected from bending and warping over time. It can get rather hot in Beaumont, CA in the summer.
  • Also, books can get rather heavy so pack books into small boxes and don't pack fragile stuff with the books.
